A V-8 powered, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan, the Chevrolet SS, returns to the US lineup.  Even better? The SS will also be Chevrolet’s next NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar and will first debut in its race configuration at the 2013 Daytona 500.

Chevrolet has a long history of using the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models of some of its most enduring nameplates, most recently on Camaro models. The limited production version of the Chevrolet SS will debut as part of the 2014 model year and will arrive in dealer showrooms late 2013.

“As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that is closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America.  “The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends beyond the track. I am personally looking forward to driving it.”

The first production vehicle offered with an SS option was the 1961 Impala – 453 were built with the performance upgrades which included a modified chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires.

The new SS will be the first rear-wheel-drive, V-8 performance sedan in the Chevrolet lineup since the Impala SS ended production in 1996. The storied history and strong emotion tied to past iterations of the SS are sure to fuel passion and intrigue as Chevy makes plans to release the vehicle in 2014.

Chevrolet was America’s best-selling performance car brand in 2011 with Camaro and Corvette accounting for one out of every three sports cars sold in the United States.  The addition of the SS to the lineup will further strengthen Chevrolet’s position as a leading performance brand.

Just how much fuel have Chevrolet Volt owners collectively saved since the Volt went on sale? Enough to fill one supertanker, or 2.1 million gallons of gasoline, which equates to more than $8 million in combined fuel savings. That’s thanks to the more than 40 million miles those drivers have traveled on electricity.

Volt drivers spend 60% of their time driving electrically, but utilize the gasoline range extender when they need to travel further than the 35-40 miles they can get on a single charge. You might be thinking, “That’s pretty cool, but what does it all mean?” Well, to break it down for you…

40 Million Total Electric Miles (EV) driven equivalent to:

• 16,373 trips across the United States (2,443 miles from New York to Los Angeles)
• 1,606 trips around the Earth (24,901 miles each)
• 167 trips to the Moon (238,657 miles each)

2,130,000 Gallons of Gas Saved equivalent to:

• 50,714 barrels of gas saved (42 gallons of gas per barrel)
• $8,000,000 saved at the gas pump (based on $3.80/gallon of gas)
• 387 U.S. semi-truck tankers of gas saved (5,500 gallons of gas each)
• One supertanker of gas saved (2 million gallons of gas)

Chevrolet recently introduced a rolling ticker on its website that showcases real-time daily driving statistics for Volt owners based on OnStar data.The ticker shows total number of miles driven, electric miles driven and gallons of gas saved.

The Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Toyota Prius c, and Hyundai Azera have all been announced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety as "Top Safety Picks." The tests put the cars through an array destruction that out do even the federal government's most rigorous trials.

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse crossover utility is the best value among large SUVs, according to  USAA’s Best Value vehicles list, which identifies the top 2012 automobiles in 16 categories that give consumers the most for the money.

The Traverse offers better safety ratings, lower insurance premium costs, higher fuel economy, better overall reliability and a lower suggested retail price compared to other vehicles in the same category, according to USAA, which provides insurance, banking, investment and retirement products and services to 9 million members of the U.S. military and their families.

“The Chevy Traverse is a family vehicle without compromise,” said Maria Rohrer, Chevrolet Traverse marketing director. “It offers space for up to eight people, with the utility, flexibility, fuel economy, and safety features families on-the-go desire.”

Best Value automobiles offer the best financial value of all vehicles USAA evaluates as part of a broader rating system called USAA Preferred, which uses quantitative data to evaluate vehicles’ cost, safety and reliability, among other key factors. Nearly 80 cars, trucks and minivans are currently designated as USAA Preferred vehicles. The Best Value list represents the vehicles at the top of each category.

The Traverse is General Motors’ best-selling crossover and is offered in LS, LT and LTZ models (with two LT trim levels: 1LT and 2LT), in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.

Product highlights include:

• EPA-estimated 17 city, 24 mpg on the highway (FWD models) with a cruising range of up to 520 highway miles
• Most storage capacity of any vehicle in its segment with up to 116.4 cubic feet (3,296 liters) of maximum cargo space

Chevrolet has sold more than 334,000 Traverses since 2008. It has been recognized by third-party consumer and safety organizations with top safety ratings and consumer Best Buy awards.

The Traverse is built at GM’s Lansing Delta Township Assembly. It has a retail starting price of $29,510.

Chevrolet is saluting the nation’s active duty and retired service members this month by providing an exclusive “Honor” badge to customers who buy an eligible vehicle through the General Motors Military Discount program. The brand also will donate $100 to Cell Phone for Soldiers for each eligible vehicle sold.

The GM Military Discount is also available to active, reserve and retired members and spouses of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, National Guard and Coast Guard. The discount, ranging from $400 to $4,000, is available on most Chevrolet cars, trucks and crossovers, depending on the model and options selected. The discount can be combined with most current incentives.

The GM Military Discount offers an additional $750 discount on selected Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles to eligible members of USAA. To date, 169,000 vehicles have been sold taking advantage of the USAA incentive. General Motors’ support of the military began in 1917 when 90% of GM’s truck production was directed toward WWI war manufacturing. Today, more than 60,000 GM employees have served in the U.S. military.

Combined with the power of 4G LTE, OnStar is looking to take vehicle connectivity to a whole new level in the future with Skype, Twonky and others being demonstrated in a Chevrolet Volt research vehicle.

The conceptual in-car infotainment system, developed by OnStar in partnership with Verizon, provides access to the Cloud through the Verizon 4G LTE network and allows for direct access to streaming content from a home computer or via a popular streaming service.

The research vehicle has three different content ‘zones’; the driver can stream music, while rear passengers can control their entertainment from screens mounted on the headrests. With everyone in their ‘zone’ passengers can create the ride they are looking for, or share content with other passengers. It doesn’t come more custom, or cool than that.

Additionally, OnStar built on its work with Smart Grid technology to create an at home control system. The connection provides control of a home thermostat, lights, garage door and other systems through the in-vehicle energy management app.

While the applications shown in the Volt research vehicle are only conceptual, they demonstrate future opportunities powered by OnStar.

“These applications are just a glimpse of what is possible when you combine the cloud computing capabilities of OnStar and the power of the Verizon 4G LTE network,” said Nick Pudar, OnStar’s vice president of business development. “Moving forward we want to continue to provide a comprehensive suite of connected services and create a seamless and safe in-vehicle experience.”
